Lets 'Transcend' beyond boundaries...

Ten more days to go and lo and behold.. here’s Transcend happening on campus this year. There is so much news and nobody to tell you. Stray posters lying around, a few of us attending auditions and most of us ignorant of the biggest ever extravaganza on campus so far (ok… minus CRP!!)

So the unofficial magazine ‘sibm-madmag’ covers the whole show.. So we have TRANSCEND LIVE, where boundaries are just an illusion………………….

Check out the official stuff..

Events..

Management Events

“Last Man Standing” is a test of endurance. Designed to have 15 individual events incorporated into it, it definitely tells a business leader apart. The key event in Transcend promises a cash prize of Rs.40,000. don’t you guys wanna give it a shot?!!!

“Zero Hour”- the mock parliament and “Elbonian Conundrum”- a strategy formulation event as the main attractions. Of course, there are the regulars- a case study contest and the most sought-after Business quiz “Domain Expertise Inquisition”. To be hosted by Giri ‘pickbrain’ Balasubramaniam..

M2C is the acronym for Mock Management Concepts. This events challenges participants to deduce flaws in all major management concepts.

Cultural events

Though the management events rule the roost, cultural events add that bit of zest to the show. From the usual ‘Dumbert’ Dumb Charades and ‘Lo and behold’ Ad Making to the unusual “Liar Liar”- ‘create an alibi’ event, our team has proved that nothing is left to chance when it comes to recreating accepted norms. On the quizzing front, there are two of them to brag about- a sports quiz and a Music quiz. “Non-Stop-Nonsense” is our tribute to the spontaneous manager.

E-events

For the online events, we have 404 Not Found, which after a goof-up is up and running!! Thanks to the tech team…

And there is e-eloquence, a blogger’s delight

Team Transcend

Ashish says, “ Transcend is bigger than CRP!!!”

Of course, we know that Mithun is heading the whole show.. we have the sponsorship team, headed by Parul; Saurav Palit is the events guy, Dhanya Mohandass is handling media. Rahul's the director. PAT stepped in to set the deadlines!!

The sponsorship team called the ‘beggars’ by Parul have helped pool in a lot of cash. We thank you guys for making Transcend happen..

Look at Saurav and you know that he would pull up something really wacky.

Juniors are putting in their heart and soul into Transcend. Wish we'd also gotto do the same.

Hello ppl,

First of all I need to apologize for delaying the release of MagMag by a fortnight. I was hoping that I shall be able to break the trend whereby only a few are contributing and it seems like no one else can. I repeat what I said in the previous mail. MadMag is not a club, not a council nor an association. I would like to call it a union of people who like to express what they think. If there is anything that you want to say, you are welcome to send it to me and I shall take care of the rest!

This month’s edition tries to take you up close and personal to the most watched person on campus. He represents the students as a whole and is the face of the college to the outside world. He is also in part responsible for the amazing placement that has taken place this year. MadMag take you up close to Sanjib Bose, our student council president.

With coming of February, cupid is in the air and all those in love and all those not in love get stuck by his arrows. If there is some one in your life, take the time to tell them that you care and if you are in search for that some one-this could be the year. Majhi takes a shot at the love scene in our campus.
There is something in Sakshi and the way that she puts words where no one else can. This time she talks about the identity of a person in Chimera. Man, does she make me think!!!

The nostalgia has already begun. The thought of the seniors leaving has entered and is beginning to take root. Shweta Kujur looks back at the two years that she spent, more with ups than downs in her article.
We have a new contributor Tasneem, who in her article deals with the feelings that one experiences when they are out of the comfort zone that we have taken for granted, the ways that a visit to a village can bring meaning.
I sign off wishing all the seniors and juniors a very happy Valentines Day!!! May you be the target of the cupid!

Chimeras by Sakshi Diwan

Do I have the freedom of choice?
Have I chosen to be who I am today?
Can I choose to be who I want to be?
Chimeras…

Do I have free will?
Have I chosen the blood smeared destiny of my race?
Can I choose a world of love and peace?
Mirages…

Do I have the right to choose?
Have I chosen my religion, my gender, my colour?
Can I choose a life where these don’t matter?
Illusions…

Do I have liberty?
Have I chosen my land and its leaders?
Can I choose my last breath?
Dellusions…

St. Valentine at SIBM

The most watched person on campus, love him, hate him there is no ignoring him. He represents the face of the students to the top floor and theirs to us. MadMag caught up with Sanjib, the student council president.

MadMag: Tell us the basics of Sanjib Bose.
Sanjib: Age – 26, From Calcutta, Basically an Engineer in Power Electronics
MM: Tell us something about you that no one knows
SB: There is nothing like that, I am too open a person
MM: In the college filled with clean shaven men, why the mush?
SB: (smiling) just didn’t want to shave it off
MM: What was it like when you became prez?
SB: the feeling was more like, I have not changed, but the people have changed around me. Not that I was alienated but the expectations went up. Among my closest friends, there was no change
MM: What is a typical day in the life of the prez?
SB: Get up, come to the coll by 9, attend whatever little classes, on campus till around 12, go home, watch the tube (news, movies)…
MM: Since you spend all the time in the Room 13, who is your favorite PAT-ie?
SB: All of them.
MM: What is the best thing about being in the PAT (other than getting to bunk the classes)?
SB: The experience of applying what the others learn in class, the basics of selling, ideating, marketing, we learnt hands on.
MM: Whom would you like to spend the last day in college? Roommates or the PAT?
SB: (after a long thought) my roommates
MM: Who would you like to date among the juniors?
SB: (smiling) there’s no one interesting.
MM: Who would be the guy you would date if you were gay?
SB: (quickly) I AM NOT GAY.
MM: What was the wildest thing that you have done when sober and when drunk?
SB: While sober, I got a prof thrown out of college, and while drunk, I generally am quite and go to sleep
MM: You keep singing a lot. What is the song that you would like people to remember you with?
SB: Kabhi Palkon Pe Aassoo by Kishore Kumar
MM: If you were to associate a song with MagMag what would it be?
SB: Koi Kahe Kehtha Rahe from Dil Chatha Hai
MM: What is your favorite quote?
SB: “LIVE LIFE KING SIZE”
MM: At the end of the day if you were to happy, gay or happy and gay what would you choose?
SB: Happy
MM: Finally any passing comment?
SB: we all know that the insti falls short of expectations. Both the management and the students are to blame. But use what we have to the max and give back what you can

MadMag wishes that he has a successful and fruitful life both personally and
professionally

My first visit to a village and my first experience with SSRC

Date: 21st Dec, 2005.
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Venue: Chande & Mulkhed

It was not as if I did not know what to expect but there is always that sense of anticipation when one has only heard about a place right? So off we went to Mulkhed which is a good 40 kms away from SIBM.

Notwithstanding the bumpy ride, it sure was quite an experience. It was amazing to see that there actually exists a place in and around Pune with a sparse population of less than 1000. All our notions about a typical Indian village were torn apart once we reached Mulkhed. I mean who would imagine that a village which has only 4 teachers in its lone school would be equipped with a Dishnet and a Maruti car? We first visited this school which is situated in the heart of the village. The lady principle we met had recently taken charge and seemed quite enthusiastic about co-operating with us for activities in the village. This is because the school usually acts as the focal point of different events happening all around the village. In fact the teachers even organize mid-day meals for the children without any Government support. It sure felt heartening to see these people doing some good work.

Our next stop was by the river which also has a temple nearby. A middle aged woman carrying a pot of water home brought back the point that there was still a lot of work to be done. Even though the village folk have access to drinking water and an intermittent supply of electricity, things like the Sarpanch alone calling the shots and fear of women to speak up at the village panchayat still exist. However, we realized that it is prudent to accept the culture and values of a society to which we are outsiders and concentrate our efforts on developmental activities.

On this note we headed back to college with the thought of the dreaded results weighing on our minds. All in all it was a visit which made us realize the immense potential which lies in these rural pockets. Given the level of enthusiasm of the village populace, SSRC sure has big plans for them!

Dedicated to SIBM who created a literate monster

Dedicated to SIBM who created a literate monster that is me, and my friends who helped me all along throughout my stint at SIBM.

Writing is just not my forte, but being jobless after CRP’s really inspired me to make use of my laptop to capture my moments of laughter and tears at SIBM.

I really cant believe the way things change as well as people, I remember the 1st day we met in Delhi, 9 of us in CCD, we chatted actually that is a bit of lie, we listened to Api who was speaking nonstop ;), and right from the beginning I knew I will have to compete with chatterboxes like her throughout the 2 years of my MBA but thanks to PAT she became invisible. (Tough for her form but yes she did ;) ).

Thanks to r seniors and the yahoo group that we had, I met my roomies online. And my journey began full swing.

The 1st day of induction at Vishvabhawan the guys were coming inside the hall one by one, and one by one my hopes of finding someone special, after the last break up I had were crushed, rather flushed!!!!. My friends and I were just trying to console each other and suddenly spotted 2 of the hottest guys (actually andho me kana raja at sibm) who grabbed r attention and we were relieved.

The days just flew by, with Shivaram Apte’s cases and other assignments, burning the night oil became the motto of life. 1 year just passed and when all of us got back to college after summer’s people had found meaningful groups, I guess 2 mahine ki judaai ne maar daala ;) and we saw a spring of convenience relationships so called good friends ;) getting together here and there.

Junior’s joined us, another batch of intelligent morons to join SIBM for education and guess what, there also we had no luck; seniors were disappointed as these people didn’t like to look beyond their books. That resulted in a total decrease in the no of batch parties, an insult to what our positioning was ;), thanks to junior’s “things changed”. The last thing that absolutely broke my heart was “NO CAMPUS BLAH”, the walls of r loo’s were shouting and missing their best friend which helped their boring selves and so and so of SIBM’s glitterati get popular. There wasn’t enough meat to put down on paper’s after the fresher’s what could the BLAH team do?

Months came and went by and CRP rush began, with the slotting in our hands all of us were talking about just one thing, “ECONOMY IS BOOMING AND HARDLY TOUCHING SIBM” but thanks to PAT they fought against it and proved it wrong, to our relief.

With ppts, G.D’s and interview’s the big fight started, it was the worst and the best phase of my life at SIBM, and I do get a li’ll senti when I think about it, so reader’s just bear.

The season actually helped me in creating better bonds with few friends specially my flat and classmates, we competed with each other but we were there with each other to boost our morale every morning. I would like to grab the opportunity to thank everyone now, and I also realized that u can never be as happy for your own achievement as when you see your best friends achieve.

After placements now we r a herd of highly jobless people with jobs.

I really question at times whether I deserve the job that I grabbed, with 2 years of full masti and frolic at SIBM, with hardly reading about power and labour reforms, and with hardly even working 30% of what my finance counterparts did, I question my worthiness of the job that I got. Thanks to my interviewer he saw the potential ;)

Lastly if I ask myself what I really learnt at SIBM, I would say the following, with due respect to my MBA couldn’t avoid bullet point ;)
(This sounds like globe gyaan so just beware)

• I learnt to question every situation I was exposed to, be it the boring lectures or the sleeping professor’s who used to put us back to sleep
• I learnt to stand up to what I really wanted from life and believed in, from fighting with the management to remove nonsense e-learning to questioning the president about the lunatic PAT interview’s, I have done it all.
• I learnt that if you have faith in what you do and what you can do no one, I repeat no one can really stop you from achieving your goals and off course your dreams.

This is what I got from SIBM a place where I know I belong, a degree which can help me earn because in this world everything gets down to “papi pet” and off course a li’ll below that too, but filhal let’s not talk about the latter;)

I know now that keeping 2 (options) in the bush is better than keeping one in hand ;), though I didn’t have much luck there but I do see few of you with full brimming smiles.
I have spent 2 years here learning just this, is a shame for the 180000 bucks that I spent here leaving behind other expenses, but yes off course how can I forget the other gifts of SIBM which was paid in kind, in the form of my friends, few others of the same MBA clan, total dogs and bitches though, I know I can fall back on them for the rest of my life, atleast on 6 of my best friends here. Out of 160 just 6 the ratio sucks!!!! but that’s SIBM. A place which teaches you to kill everyone if the need be for your development.

I will become an alumnus of SIBM in few months but a part of me will still be here, probably outside the room no 13, checking the notice board’s or, outside the council rooms trying to just check whether people really work or just claim ;), or probably in room no 9 my marketing class or just having a double special in ncc.

That’s SIBM my Institute and I am definitely gonna miss the 4 storey building and the people who made my 2 years very very special and unforgettable.
